Update : 06 Jan 2024, 08:58 PM

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal has warned that polling at centres or whole constituencies will cancelled altogether if there are any irregularities in Sunday’s election.

Vote rigging, ballot snatching, monetary transactions and possible show of power in favour of any candidate or candidates will be strictly resisted, the CEC said in a speech addressing the nation on Saturday evening.

If evidence supporting such allegations is found, candidacies will be cancelled immediately. If necessary, voting at the centre or constituency will be completely suspended.

CEC Kazi Habibul Awal also called on the public to unitedly resist all electoral irregularities.

He said: “The Election Commission is making utmost efforts to conduct a fair, acceptable, and impartial election. Election campaigning concluded in a festive atmosphere filled with enthusiasm and excitement. Now, they are just waiting for voting to begin.”

He encouraged everyone to come to polling centres and cast their votes.

CEC Awal further said: “The expected level of competition is not happening in this election. The commission is concerned about recent acts of sabotage and violence. Any crisis can be resolved through discussion and compromise.”
