The police have detained five individuals for their suspected involvement in arson attacks on two polling centres in Gafargaon and Nandail upazilas of Mymensingh.
Mymensingh Superintendent of Police Masum Ahmed Bhuiyan said: “Miscreants set fire to Parshipara Government Primary School in Mymensingh-10 on Saturday morning.”
“A security guard, Ariful Islam, was paid Tk2,000 by a BNP activist to set fire to the polling centre. The police seized the Tk2,000 and found an SMS conversation between Ariful and the BNP activist, Sabbir, before the arson,” he added.
Locals noticed a fire at the centre around 4am and managed to bring it under control before the arrival of the fire service.
The two were detained later.
Meanwhile, at around 10:45am, unidentified individuals set fire to a polling room at Haripur Government Primary School in Singrail union of Nandail upazila.
Police arrested three BNP activists related to this incident, who have initially admitted their involvement, police said.
Security has been increased in the area to prevent any untoward situation, the SP said.
