Independent candidate AK Faiyazul Haque Raju's motorcycle convoy was allegedly vandalized by the Awami League activists in Barisal-2 (Wazirpur-Banaripara) constituency on Tuesday.
The independent candidate claimed that four motorcycles were vandalized while twelve others were set ablaze.
At this time, forty people were injured in the incident that took place in Banaripara upazila's Baishari union.
Faiyazul Haque, grandson of Sher-e-Bangla AK Fazlul Haque , is running as an independent candidate with Eagle symbol in the 12th general election.
Rashed Khan Menon, president of the Workers' Party, will contest against him with Boat symbol.
According to Faiyazul Haque, Banaripara Upazila Awami League President Golam Farooq, General Secretary Mawlad Hossain Sana, and his younger brother, Udayakathi UP Chairman Rahad Ahmed Nani, attacked his motorcycle convoy with firearms, sharp weapons, and batons while going to Morichbunia from Banaripara. They opened fire and beat up Eagle activists.
The local Awami League leaders denied the claim, saying that no local Awami League or Boat activists were involved in the attack.
Banaripara police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mainul Islam said he visited the spot with the upazila nirbahi officer.
He said police have yet to identify the miscreants.
Banaripara Upazila Nirbahi Officer Antara Halder said that no bullet casings were found at the scene. The OC has been ordered to file a case and arrest every individual involved in the incident.
Banaripara Upazila Awami League General Secretary Mawlad Hossain Sana said Faizul Haque's allegations are completely false. None of his men are involved in the incident of motorcycle vandalism. “Eagle activists attacked their own activists and injured them.”
