An independent candidate has filed complaints against two teachers for campaigning for the Boat candidate in the Dhaka-20 constituency.

Independent candidate Mohaddesh Hossain filed the complaints to the Dhamrai upazila nirbahi officer and assistant returning officer of the constituency on Tuesday.

The accused are Nobojug College Vice Principal Jahangir Alam and Hamida Afaz Girls High School teacher Altaf Hossain Labu.

According to the written complaints, Altaf Hossain Labu and Jahangir Alam both regularly participate in Boat's door-to-door election campaign with Benjir Ahmed while holding positions teachers at government MPO-affiliated educational institutions.

In response to the accusations, Altaf Hossain Labu refuted the claims of active campaigning.

He said: “Some acquaintances of mine came to my house seeking votes. At that time, they handed me some of their leaflets. Several people took pictures at that time and posted it on Facebook.”

Meanwhile, Jahangir Alam defended his actions by pointing out that many teachers are involved in various political roles.

However, he clarified that he received the duty letter for the position of presiding officer on Tuesday and refrained from campaigning after assuming this responsibility.

Jahangir said he has no problem to step down from the presiding officer duty if required.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer and Assistant Returning Officer Tajwar Akram Sakapi Ibn Sajjad said he has received two written complaints.

He said that teachers, if on government salary, are prohibited from participating in political campaigns and would face disciplinary action in accordance with the established rules and regulations.
