A joyous atmosphere filled Bangabandhu Udyan in Barisal on Friday as people celebrated the arrival of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for a grand election rally. A large crowd had gathered to express their gratitude and watch the prime minister live, instead of on television.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's visit to Barisal after over five years sparked excitement not only among party members but also resonated with the general public.
Bithi from Barisal said: “I always watch the prime minister on television. Today I travelled to Bangabandhu Udyan to see her in person. The prime minister has contributed more than any other government to women's empowerment in the country.”
Moslem Uddin from Bhola said the prime minister will seek votes for the Awami League candidates in the six districts of the Barisal division, and “we will assure her that we will continue the development process by electing them in the January 7 election.”
“There is nothing left to ask of her; she has given us everything without us asking for it. Now it is time to show our support for her.”
From as early as 10am, leaders and activists arrived and took positions throughout the field. Law enforcement has taken extra security precautions to prevent untoward incidents.
People joining the rally were being screened by metal detectors at four points before accessing the ground. Several law enforcement agencies were working to ensure the prime minister's safety.
