180 observers from 35 countries applied for January 7 election

  • Gambia latest addition to the list

The government has received applications for 180 people from 35 countries to observe the parliamentary elections to be held on January 7.

Foreign Ministry's spokesperson Seheli Sabrin disclosed this at the regular weekly briefing at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday.

She said so far, 10 countries have confirmed their participation.

Besides, about 30 other officials from different countries will come to Bangladesh as election observers.

Earlier, Seheli Sabrin said nine countries - India, Sri Lanka, China, Russia, Japan, Uzbekistan, Mauritius, Georgia, and Palestine - would observe the 12th parliamentary elections.

Gambia later added to the list.

Besides, OIC, Commonwealth and Arab Parliament will also observe the elections. A four-member EU expert panel is also in Dhaka to observe the election.

An IRI, NDI joint team will also observe the elections.
