An allegation has been raised that Mohaddes Hossain, an independent candidate for the Dhaka-20 parliamentary seat in the January 7 polls, brought out a procession with a motorcycle showdown breaching the electoral code of conduct.

The procession was brought out in front of Dhamrai upazila parishad around 4pm on Friday.

The procession marched towards some important roads of Dhamrai municipality and Dhulivita-Islampur road of Dhaka-Aricha highway in Dhamrai.

There were around 50 motorcycles in front of the procession and around 200-300 supporters of Mohaddes took part.

Besides, the traffic movement was halted on the Dhaka-bound lane of the Dhaka-Aricha highway for about three-kilometre area.

The procession also created traffic congestion on the Dhulivita road, which is one of the key roads of Dhamrai. General commuters of the road suffered due to the traffic jam.

Independent candidate Mohaddes Hossain could not be reached for comment.

Dhamrai Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and Assistant Returning Officer Tajwar Akram Sakapi Ibn Sajjad said that showdown violates the code of conduct.

“However, we did not receive any complaints in this regard. We are looking into the matter.”

According to the Election Code of Conduct, no registered political party or its candidate or independent candidate or any other person on their behalf shall take out a procession or torch procession or hold any showdown with any truck, bus, motorcycle, boat, train or any other motorized vehicle.
