The Election Inquiry Committee has issued a show-cause notice to Asibur Rahman Khan, the elder son of Awami League's Presidium Member and Member of Parliament for Madaripur-2 constituency, Shahjahan Khan, for threatening voters.
The notice was issued following his threat to voters, saying: "If anyone speaks out against the Boat (Awami League’s electoral symbol), their voice will be silenced."
He has been asked to appear in person and provide an explanation at the Chairman of the Election Inquiry Committee and Judge Shariful Haque’s office at 11am on Sunday.
The notice, signed by Judge Shariful Haque was sent to Asibur Rahman Khan on Friday. The matter was confirmed by Mohammad Anwar Hossain, the court's bench assistant.
Asibur Rahman Khan made the statement while seeking votes for Awami League candidate Abdus Sobhan Mia alias Golap when he visited Tekherhat for election campaigning on Monday night.
According to court sources, a 2.53-minute video of Asibur Rahman Khan went viral. Various media outlets reported on it, showing him threatening the voters -- which violates the electoral code of conduct.
Assistant Returning and Madaripur Upazila Election Officer Nanani Khan said: "Asibur Rahman has created panic and fear among the voters of Madaripur-3 constituency. Evidence including video was sent to the Election Inquiry Committee to take action against him.”
