The candidacy of the Awami League-nominated candidate for Faridpur-3, Shamim Haque, has been cancelled.
Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal and other election commissioners passed the verdict after hearing an appeal on Friday.
Earlier, independent candidate AK Azad appealed against Shamim’s candidacy, citing his dual citizenship.
According to the appeal, Shamim also has citizenship in the Netherlands.
CEC Kazi Habibul Awal chaired a hearing on the legitimacy of his candidacy at Nirbachan Bhaban on Wednesday.
The CEC later adjourned the hearing and set the judgment date for Friday.
According to the Representation of the People Order, 1972, an election candidate cannot hold dual citizenship.
The last date for withdrawal of candidature is December 17, and returning officers will allocate electoral symbols to candidates on December 18.
