Update : 14 Dec 2023, 10:46 PM

The Election Commission (EC) on Thursday restored the candidacy of 44 aspirants for the January 7 general election, with the hearing of appeals against the returning officers' previous decision regarding candidacies.

It came as the EC approved the transfer of 536 policemen, mostly constables, across the country.

Expelled BNP leader Major (Retd) Akhtaruzzaman is among the 44 candidates.

On the other hand, the appeals of 52 candidates, including the Awami League candidate for Mymensingh-9 and former lawmaker Abdus Salam, were turned down on Thursday – the fifth day of the hearing.

Additionally, the verdict on four appeals will be given later, while an applicant skipped the hearing.

With Thursday's development, the EC has so far restored the candidacy of 257 hopefuls.
