National polls: 8 to fight for Dhaka-19, 6 for Dhaka-20

Eight candidatures out of 13 have been declared valid for the Dhaka-19 constituency while six out of nine nominations declared valid for the Dhaka- 20 in the upcoming national parliamentary polls. 

The nomination forms were declared valid on Monday after scrutinization at the office of the Dhaka Deputy Commissioner, Dhaka-19 Assistant Returning Officer and Savar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mazharul Islam and Dhaka-20 Assistant Returning Officer and Dhamrai Upazila Nirbahi Officer Hossain Mohammad Hai Joki confirmed.

In Dhaka-19, 13 candidates submitted nomination papers. Of them, five were declared invalid.

The valid candidates are - Awami League party candidate Enamur Rahman, two independent candidates deprived of Awami League nomination, former MP Talukdar Mohammad Tauhid Jung alias Murad and Ashulia unit Awami League General Secretary Mohammad Saiful Islam, Gano Front's candidate Nurul Amin, Trinamool BNP's candidate Mahabubul Hasan, Bangladesh Congress' Milan Kumar Bhanj, Zaker Party's Shamsuddin Ahmed and National People's Party's candidate Israfil Hussain Savari.

Candidates whose nomination papers were declared invalid are - Jatiya Party's Bahadur Islam and Abul Kalam Azad, Bangladesh Supreme Party's Md Zulhas, Irene Parveen of Bangladesh Jatiya Party, BNM’s Md Saiful Islam Member.

In Dhaka-20, nine candidates submitted nomination papers. Of them, three were declared invalid.

The valid candidates are - Awami League-nominated Benjir Ahmed, former MP and Upazila Awami League President MA Malek as an independent candidate, Upazila Awami League's Organizing Secretary Mohaddesh Hossain, Jatiya Party's Khan Mohammad Israfil, Zaker Party’s Md Saidur Rahman and National People's Party’s Rebecca Sultana.

Candidates whose nomination papers were declared invalid are - Bangladesh Supreme Party’s Md Minhaj Uddin, Arju Mia of Bangladesh Congress, and Muktijote’s Aminur Rahman.

According to the schedule announced by the Election Commission, the deadline for submission of nomination forms was November 30. 

A total of 2,741 nomination papers were submitted against 300 constituencies across the country. 

A total of 30 out of 44 registered political parties submitted their nomination forms to contest the election.

Of the aspirants, the most, 298 candidates, are from the Awami League, 289 from JaPa, 230 from Trinamool BNP, 90 from JaSoD, and 82 from the BNM.

The scrutinization of nomination papers started on December 1 and continued till Monday.

The deadline for filing and disposing of appeals against the returning officer's decision is December 5-15, and the last date for withdrawing candidacy is December 17.

The returning officers will allocate symbols on December 18.

The 12th parliamentary election will be held on January 7, as per the schedule announced by Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal on November 15.
