The nomination of expelled BNP leader Major (retd) Shahjahan Omar has been declared valid as the Awami League’s candidate for Jhalakathi-1 (Rajapur-Kathalia) in the upcoming general election.
Meanwhile, sitting MP Bazlul Haque Haroon had filed his nomination papers as an Awami League candidate, but it was cancelled because he had not received the party’s nomination.
Deputy Commissioner and Returning Officer Farah Gul made this announcement on Sunday.
Shahjahan Omar (Bir Uttam) was present during the scrutiny of nomination papers. This was his first appearance in Jhalakathi after leaving the BNP and submitting his nomination papers as the Awami League candidate. At that time Awami League leaders and activists were with him.
According to sources at the returning officer's office, six out of 11 people who had filed their nomination papers for Jhalakathi-1 and one out of four for Jhalakathi-2 (Sadar-Nalchity) had their nomination cancelled.
