Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal on Monday said that public perception is crucial in determining the credibility of the upcoming polls.
Speaking at the Electoral Training Institute on Monday, the CEC emphasized the importance of citizens declaring that an election was free, fair, and acceptable for it to be deemed credible.
Addressing the issue of external interference in the electoral process, CEC Awal expressed concern over foreign influences attempting to sway the upcoming 12th parliamentary polls scheduled for January 7, 2024.
He highlighted the need for a transparent and unbiased election to safeguard the country's economy and future.
The CEC said: “The nation is currently facing a crisis regarding the upcoming elections, where sentiments of both belief and disbelief are in a state of uncertainty. It is imperative that we navigate through this situation collectively.
“Every individual should shoulder equal responsibility and diligently perform their duties. Regrettably, our progress in democracy has not been consistent. In order to uphold the constitution, each person must fulfill their responsibilities with parity and commitment," he added.
Awal instructed officials to carry out their duties with courage and honesty, condemning the interference in the electoral process, such as the incident of sealing the by-elections in Brahmabaria and Lakshmipur.
To address concerns of fair polls, the CEC mentioned the formation of 300 Election Investigation Committees, signaling a commitment to vigilance and transparency.
He said: "This (election probe committees) proves our sincere commitment to vigilance. While judges can fearlessly exercise vigilance, not everyone possesses the same capability. It is crucial, for the protection of our nation's democracy, that you contribute to the best of your ability with intelligence, wisdom, and courage.
“Our aim is to witness a smooth electoral process, ensuring voters face no impediments. We envision voters standing in orderly lines that move efficiently, minimizing wait times. Whether individuals choose to cast their votes or not, the process should be accessible and swift," the CEC added.
As the 12th national parliamentary election approaches, CEC Awal urged strict adherence to campaign regulations, with candidates prohibited from campaigning within 21 days of the election.
In light of the challenges and concerns, CEC Awal called on all involved parties to discharge their duties honestly and with vigilance, emphasizing the collective responsibility to protect the democratic process and uphold the constitution.
