Brahmanbaria-2, Lakshmipur-3 by-polls underway

Voting for the by-polls to Brahmanbaria-2 and Lakshmipur-3 constituencies are underway, amid a countrywide blockade called by BNP-Jamaat on Sunday.

The polls began at 8am and will continue till 4pm without any breaks. 

In Brahmanbaria-2 (Sarail-Ashuganj), a total of 800 police officers and 1,584 Ansar members have been deployed. 

Besides, a large number of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) members are also patrolling, Brahmanbaria Superintendent of Police Mohammad Shakhawat Hossain said. 

Shahgir Alam said 17 executive magistrates will be on duty in 17 unions of the two upazilas for free and fair elections and the safety of voters. 

They are being supervised by three additional deputy commissioners. 

Awami League's Shahjahan Alam Saju, Jatiya Party's Abdul Hamid Bhasani, Zaker Party's Zahirul Islam Jewel, National People's Party's Abdur Razzaque and independent candidate Ziaul Haque Mridha are contesting the election. 

Meanwhile, all out preparations have been taken to conduct the by-polls to the Lakshmipur-3 constituency peacefully, said Farhad Hossain, the returning officer of the election.

He said besides the presiding officers, 16 executive magistrates, 950 policemen, 1,495 Ansar members and six platoons of BGB have been deployed.  In addition, seven teams of RAB will be patrolled during the elections.

Deputy Commissioner Suraiya Jahan on Sunday said that Lakshmipur by-polls will be conducted peacefully, if there is any irregularity or if anyone tries to create anarchy, strict action will be taken.

Awami League's Golam Faruk Pinku, Jatiya Party's Mohammad Rakib Hossain, Zaker Party's Shamsul Karim Khokon and NPP's Selim Mahmud are vying for the seat.

Earlier, on October 1, the parliament secretariat declared the two seats vacant, following the deaths of Lakshmipur-3 lawmaker AKM Shajahan Kamal and Brahmanbaria-2 lawmaker Abdus Sattar Bhuiyan.
