Brahmanbaria-2 by-polls: Five candidates get symbols

  • Candidates urged to follow the electoral code of conduct 
  • The constituency fell vacant following the death of Abdus Sattar

Five candidates contesting for the post of Member of Parliament in the by-polls of Brahmanbaria-2 constituency, scheduled to be held on November 5, were distributed symbols on Friday.

Returning Officer and Deputy Commissioner Md Shahgir Alam handed over the symbols to the candidates at his office.

The five candidates who received symbols are Awami League candidate Md Shahjahan Alam Saju (boat), Jatiya Party candidate Md Abdul Hamid Bhasani (plough), independent candidate Ziaul Haq Mridha (banana), National People's Party candidate Md Razzak Hossain (mango) and Zaker Party's Zahirul Islam Jewel (rose).

The activists and supporters expressed their excitement after receiving the symbols. The candidates also expressed optimism about winning.

Shahgir Alam urged the candidates to follow the electoral code of conduct. He also warned of taking legal action if rules are violated. 

Brahmanbaria-2 (Sarail-Ashuganj) constituency fell vacant following the death of Abdus Sattar Bhuiya on September 30.

In the 11th national election held in 2018, lawyer Abdus Sattar was elected for the fifth time as the BNP-nominated candidate for the seat.

Following the party's decision, he resigned from BNP in December 2022. 

He was one of seven BNP leaders who resigned from parliament on December 11 in line with a decision of the party.

Later he decided to contest the subsequent by-polls to his constituency as an independent candidate. 

He was later expelled from the BNP on January 2.

He became an MP for the sixth time as an independent candidate in February by-polls.
