The ruling Awami League has chosen Md Shahjahan Alam Shaju and Golam Faruk Pinku to contest the upcoming by-elections to Brahmanbaria-2 and Lakshmipur-3, respectively.
Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader made the announcement after a meeting of the party’s parliamentary nomination board, chaired by party chief and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, at Ganabhaban on Sunday night.
Shaju is secretary of the education ministry’s Non-government Teachers and Employees Welfare Trust as well as general secretary of Shadhinota Shikkhak Parishad, while Faruk is president of the Awami League’s Lakshmipur unit.
"Regardless of how much domestic or foreign pressure we may face, we will not go outside the constitution [regarding the general election]. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will serve as the head of government during the election," Quader told reporters.
The by-elections to the Brahmanbaria-2 and Lakshmipur-3 constituencies are scheduled for November 5.
Nomination papers must be submitted by October 11. Candidates wishing to withdraw from the race will have until October 19 to do so.
The Parliament Secretariat recently declared the two constituencies vacant due to the passing of Lakshmipur-3 lawmaker AKM Shajahan Kamal and Brahmanbaria-2 lawmaker Abdus Sattar Bhuiyan.
