Awami League candidate Nasir Uddin, has won by a huge margin for mayoral post in Benapole municipal polls, held on Monday after almost 13 years.
He received 13,265 votes on the boat symbol. His nearest rival, independent candidate Mofizur Rahman Sajan (mobile phone symbol) got 3,825 votes, as per the unofficial results.
Jessore District Senior Election Officer Anisur Rahman confirmed that 57% votes have been cast in the election.
Meanwhile, Kamrunnahar Anna, Julekha Begum and Morjina Khatun Mim were elected unofficially in the three reserved women's seats.
A total of 47 councilor candidates contested in 9 wards.
The elected general councilors are - Sultan Ahmed Babu in Sadipur 1 no ward, Shariful Islam Sharif in Namazgram 2 no ward, Mizanur Rahman in Benapole 3 no ward, Shahinur Rahman Shaheen in Kagazpukur 4 no ward, Azimuddin Gazi in Dhigirpar 5 no ward, Asaduzzaman in Bhaberbed 6 no ward, Majnur Rahman in Gazipur 7 no ward, Hasanujzaman Tajim of Chhota Achra 8 no ward and Kamal Hossain of Boro Achra 9 no ward.
Total voters in this municipality is 30,385.
Balloting started at 8am and continued to 4pm in 12 polling centres on Monday. Voter turnout in each centre was satisfactory without a few isolated incidents at 2/1 centres.
The first election was held on 13 January 2011 after the formation of Benapole municipality in 2006 out of 11 villages of Benapole union.
After that there were no more elections.
On April 27, 2022, the municipal council was declared dissolved and the Sharsha Upazila Nirbahi Officer was appointed as the administrator.
