Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud has said the upcoming general election will be held according to the constitution and that the government will perform the duties of election-time government.
"Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will discharge duties as the premier during the polls. There is no chance to go outside the constitution by an inch," Hasan, also joint general secretary of the ruling Awami League, told reporters at Kurigram Circuit House before addressing an extended meeting of the district unit of the party as chief guest on Friday.
He said that in India, the UK, Australia, Japan, France, Germany and other democratic countries, incumbent governments perform duties of polls-time government, adding that in the US, the incumbent president does not resign before the presidential election.
The BNP is demanding a caretaker government system, which also exists in Pakistan, he said.
"My question is why do they (BNP) only follow Pakistan? A few days ago Mirza Fakhrul said Pakistan [rule] was better. So it is natural that they would follow Pakistan," Hasan added.
