Awami League candidate Merina Jahan has won the by-polls for the Sirajganj-6 constituency by a massive margin.
The ruling party candidate bagged 110,580 votes, while her nearest rival, Jatiya Party-nominated candidate Moktar Hossain, got 535 votes.
Meanwhile, Advocate Humayun Kabir, an independent candidate, received 343 votes.
Returning Officer Md Faridul Islam announced the results at 9pm on Tuesday.
He said out of 420,780 voters in the constituency, which includes 13 unions and one municipality, 111,458 people had cast their votes using electronic voting machines (EVMs).
There were a total of 160 polling stations and the overall turnout was 26.49%.
The parliamentary seat became vacant on September 2 after the death of Awami League lawmaker Md Hasibur Rahman Swapon.
Awami League’s parliamentary board, chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, had picked Merina Jahan for the Sirajganj-6 by-polls.
