Five councillors out of eight who joined the ruling Awami League from BNP after the Khulna City Corporation (KCC) elections held in 2018, were defeated in the polls held on Monday.
Of them, some are in various responsibilities of Awami League as members of the Khulna metropolitan executive committee.

According to sources, the wards known as BNP's vote bank in Khulna politics acts as a regulator to determine the victory and defeat in the local and national elections. The rival candidates were repeatedly defeated in those wards.

Among them, councillor Shamsuddin Prince of Ward No 6, Sheikh Hafizur Rahman Hafiz of Ward No 17 and Sheikh Gausul Azam of Ward No 20 won in the election.
However, the former general secretary of ward BNP Rajul Hasan Raju has been elected as the councillor of ward no 18 and former member secretary of district labour party Zakir Hossain Biplab as the councillor of 19 no ward. Both of them are now established in Awami League politics.
