KCC Mayor Khaleque: Low voter turnout due to mill, factory closure

The voter turnout in Monday’s KCC polls was 47.88%

Update : 13 Jun 2023, 10:34 AM

Talukder Abdul Khaleque, the newly-elected Khulna City Corporation (KCC) mayor, said low voter turnout in the polls was caused by several mills and factories in the district being closed.

“Many workers have left Khulna due to the closure of some mills and factories. As a result, voter turnout was slightly lower than expected,” he said while talking to reporters on Monday.

Khaleque, who became mayor of Khulna City Corporation for the third time, assured everyone of finishing the unfinished development works of the city.

“I will work with everyone regardless of party affiliation. Complete the unfinished work and complete the ongoing development work,” he said.

The Awami League-backed mayoral candidate Talukder Abdul Khaleque became the mayor for the third time in Khulna City Corporation elections.

Among the 289 centres, Khaleque secured 154,825 (60.4%) votes. His nearest competitor Bangladesh Islami Andolan's Abdul Awal (hand Fan) received 60,064 (23.4%) votes.

The voter turnout was 47.88%.
