CEC: Not our duty to help someone win an election

Election Commission’s duty is to ensure that people cast their votes correctly, Kazi Habibul Awal says

Update : 31 May 2023, 01:55 PM

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal has said it is not the Election Commission's duty to help anyone win or make anyone lose elections.

He was speaking as chief guest speech at a briefing with polling officials ahead of the Khulna City Corporation election, at the Khulna Government Women's College auditorium on Wednesday.

There should be no mistrust among people about the commission, he said, adding that the commission's duty is to ensure that voters cast their votes correctly.

Addressing the polling officials, he said: "Do not take your responsibilities lightly. The presiding officer can stop the vote if he wants. You are responsible for maintaining discipline inside the centre.”

Election Commissioner Brigadier General (Retd) Md Ahsan Habib Khan, Election Commission Secretary Md Jahangir Alam and the returning officer were present at the briefing.
