The High Court has rejected the writ filed by independent candidate Jahangir Alam challenging the Election Commission's decision to cancel his nomination papers for the post of mayor in the upcoming Gazipur City Corporation elections.

The High Court bench consisting of Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Muhammad Mahbub ul Islam passed the order on Monday.

On April 30, the returning officer of Gazipur announced the cancellation of Jahangir's nomination papers over allegations of loan default. Later, Dhaka Divisional Election Commissioner Md Sabirul Islam rejected Jahangir's appeal against that decision.

As a result, the returning officer's decision to cancel Jahangir's nomination for the post of mayor in the upcoming elections of Gazipur City Corporation was upheld. However, Jahangir's mother Zayeda Khatun's nomination papers for the mayoral post are valid.

Meanwhile, suspended Gazipur City Corporation mayor Jahangir Alam on Sunday filed a writ petition in the High Court challenging a decision rejecting his nomination papers for the mayoral post in the upcoming Gazipur City Corporation election.

Jahangir Alam was elected mayor of Gazipur City Corporation as the candidate of the Awami League in 2018.

In September 2021, videos of Jahangir making derogatory comments about Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and martyred freedom fighters at a program went viral on social media.

In a meeting held on November 19 of that year, the ruling Awami League expelled Alam from his position in the party over the incident, followed by his suspension as GCC mayor by the local government ministry a few days later over various allegations.

The allegations included illegal land grabbing, not compensating people after taking over land for development and working against the public interest.

The Awami League later took Jahangir back into the party on the condition that he would not act against the organization's interests and would not break the discipline in the future.
