Gaibandha-5 by-polls: Awami League candidate wins by huge margin

The results were announced at around 8:30pm on Wednesday

Awami League candidate Mahmud Hasan Ripon won by a huge margin in the Gaibandha-5 (Saghata-Phulchari) constituency.

He got 78,285 votes while his nearest rival Ghulam Shahid Ranju of Jatiya Party (JaPa) got 44,752 votes.

Returning officer Md Faridul Islam announced the final results of the 145 polling centres in two upazilas at around 8:30pm on Wednesday.

Earlier in the evening, Assistant Returning Officer Abdul Mottaleb and Assistant Returning Officer Md Kamrul Islam announced the election results from Phulchari and Saghata upazila parishad hall rooms respectively.

The results show that out of total 145 centres, boat symbol of AL got 23,787 votes and plow symbol of JaPa got 12,293 votes in 57 centres of Phulchari upazila.

Besides, in 88 centres of Saghata upazila, boat symbol got 54,498 votes and plow symbol got 32,459 votes. As a result, Mahmud Hasan Ripon won by 33,533 votes.

Election Returning Officer Md Faridul Islam said: “The voting was fair. 35% vote casting has been done.”

Earlier on Wednesday, polling started from 8:30am and continued till 4:30pm. 

Gaibandha-5 constituency consists of Phulchari and Saghata upazilas. Total voters in 17 unions of two upazilas are 3,39,004 people.

The seat fell vacant after the death of former deputy speaker Advocate Md Fazle Rabbi Miah on July 23 last year. Then on October 12 last year, the Election Commission (EC) suspended the by-election due to “rampant irregularities” on the election day and later the commission fixed January 4 for holding the polls.

Following the death of Gaibandha-5 lawmaker and Deputy Speaker of the Parliament Fazle Rabbi Miah on July 22, 2022, it became a constitutional obligation to hold election for the parliamentary seat by October 20, 2022. Accordingly, it was scheduled for October 12.

The candidates of the Gaibandha-5 by-election are-Awami League candidate Mahmud Hasan Ripon, Jatiya Party candidate AHM Golam Shaheed Ranju, Bikalpa Dhara candidate Advocate Jahangir Alam, independent candidate Syed Mahbubur Rahman.
