UP polls: AL wins 2 in Tangail, loses 3 in Faridpur

Unofficial results were published by the concerned authorities on Wednesday night

Awami League candidates won four out of seven Union Parishad elections in Tangail and Faridpur on Wednesday.

In Tangail, boat candidates won two of the four UP polls and independent candidates won the rest.

The matter was confirmed by relevant sources on Wednesday night.

Independent candidate Suzayet Hossain unofficially won in Lihimpur UP elections. He got 5,363 votes while his closest independent candidate Salim (Pineapple symbol) bagged 2,506 votes.

Awami League candidates Badiuzzaman Faruq won the Kakua UP election and Iqbal Hossain won the Kakuli UP election. 

Independent candidate Aslam Hussain won in Mahmudnagar UP.

District Election Office sources said that 21 candidates contested for the post of chairman in these four UP elections. 

The total number of voters in the election was 76,445. Out of 39 centres in the election, 29 centres were at risk.

In this regard, Tangail District Election Officer AHM Kamrul Hasan said: “The polling of four UPs of Tangail was held in a fair and peaceful manner. However, polling took place slowly in some centres due to time-consuming voting in EVMs.”

He added that more than 70% of voters cast votes in the election.

As many as two platoons of BGB, 490 policemen, RAB and a large number of law enforcement forces were deployed to make the elections fair.

In Faridpur, the candidates of the boat symbol lost in elections of three UPs of Madhukhali upazila on Wednesday.

The elections took place at Arpara, Dumain and Meghchami UPs between 8am-4pm. The unofficial results were announced at night after finishing counting votes.

The total number of voters in Arpara union was 10,381. Nine candidates contested for the chairman’s position, two for the post of female reserved member and 34 for the post of a general member.

Independent candidate Sadikur Rahman Sajjad (motorcycle symbol) was unofficially elected by 2,762 votes for the post of chairman in Arpara union. His nearest rival Md Badruzzaman Babu (horse symbol) got 2,267 votes.

On the other hand, independent candidate Shah Asaduzzaman Tapan (pineapple symbol) was unofficially elected by 3,851 votes for the post of chairman of Dumain union. His nearest rival candidate Khurshid Alam Masum of boat symbol got 3,236 votes.

The total number of voters in Dumain union was 9,049. Two candidates contested for the post of chairman, nine for reserved female member post and 31 for the general member.

Independent candidate Md Sabbir Uddin Sheikh (glasses symbol) of Meghchami union was unofficially elected chairman by 4,474 votes. His closest rival candidate Md Hasan Ali Khan of boat symbol got 2,628 votes.

The total voters in Meghchami union was 11,614. Three candidates contested for the post of chairman, 11 for the reserved female member post and 29 for the general member post.

On the other hand, Kabir Mandal (Punjabi symbol) was elected unofficially by getting 871 votes in the by-election for the councillor post of Ward No 6 of Madhukhali municipality. His nearest rival Golam Mustafa (water bottle symbol) got 529 votes.

Madhukhali upazila Election Officer ABM Afzal Hossain confirmed the results.

He said that voting was done through EVM in the election. “Executive magistrate, police, RAB, BGB, Ansar, members of intelligence agencies and other law enforcement agencies were engaged to conduct the elections in a fair and peaceful manner,” he added.
