Awami League proposes ten names for Election Commission

The ruling party forwards its recommendations to the president-appointed search panel

The Awami League has proposed ten names for positions of chief election commissioner and election commissioners.

The ruling party’s Information and Research Secretary Selim Mahmud submitted their recommendations on Friday to the Cabinet Division, reports Bangla daily Prothom Alo. 

A sealed envelope, containing the list made by party chief Sheikh Hasina and the presidium members, has been handed over to the officials, Selim told the newspaper. 

According to the report, Selim said he was not aware of the names proposed for the new Election Commission.

After the first meeting of the search panel, headed by Justice Obaidul Hassan, on Sunday, the Cabinet Division, in a statement asked, political parties to send 10 names each by email or directly.

According to the new law, the committee will propose 10 nominees to the president on a list with two candidates for five positions, including that of the chief election commissioner.

The president will then form the 13th Election Commission picking from the list.

The tenure of the current KM Nurul Huda-led commission ends on February 14.
