New EC: President Hamid invites Awami League to dialogue on Jan 17

16 political parties have so far attended the discussions with the president

President Abdul Hamid has invited the ruling Awami League to a dialogue at Bangabhaban on January 17 on the formation of the next Election Commission.

The meeting would take place at 4pm on that day, the Press wing of Bangabhaban confirmed on Sunday.

The president has initiated talks with registered political parties to solicit their views on the formation of a new commission.

Abdul Hamid has, so far, invited 32 parties for discussions since the process began on December 20.

Six political parties including the BNP, Islami Andolon Bangladesh, Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (Rob), which were also invited by the president, rejected the dialogue.

Sixteen political parties so far held meetings with the president.

The term of the KM Nurul Huda-led EC comes to an end on February 14.
