Nasrin Sultana Dipa, a ruling party candidate, has become the second woman to be elected as the chairman of a union parishad (UP) in the Sunamganj district.
She is now the third woman to become a UP chairman in the Sylhet Division, according to local election officials.
Contesting Wednesday’s fifth phase UP elections from Sukhair Rajapur Uttar union under Dharmapasha upazila, Dipa bagged 3,913 votes while independent candidate Jakir Hossain came second with 2,645 votes.
Before her, Tanjima Mahjerin had become the first woman to be elected chairman of a union in the division. She was elected from the Solukabad union under Sunamganj’s Bishwambarpur upazila in 2011.
Then in 2016, Choudhury Samsunnahar was elected chairman of Deorgach union under Habiganj’s Chunarughat upazila.
Talking to reporters yesterday, an elated Dipa said both her father and maternal grandfather had served as chairman of Sukhair Rajapur Uttar multiple times. “I want to carry that family legacy.”
