Ishraque: I have became the people's mayor, regardless of the result

BNP sought to postpone voting at 198 centres in the south

Update : 01 Feb 2020, 06:01 PM

BNP's Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) mayoral candidate Ishraque Hossain has said he has become the mayor of the people regardless of the election result.

He made the statement at Sheikh Kamal Government Primary School polling centre in Shyampur around 3:30pm on Saturday.

Ishraque said: "The centre was completely vacant when we reached here. There were no voters except for members of law enforcement agencies standing at the main gate. They opened up the locks seeing us approaching."

He also said: "We received complaints of   our party symbol missing from the electronic voting machines (EVM). I have discussed the matter with a presiding officer but he completely denied the allegations.  There are no voters at his centre either, but he claims people are casting their votes.

"I have nothing else to say. A similar scenario has been seen at all other centres. The polling agents were asked to leave and they (opposition party) are casting all the votes by themselves," he said.

The mayoral candidate added: " The opposition is really scared of the voters. Three days ago their senior leader Abdur Rahman talked about taking over the centres and that is what has happened.

"We  do not want any chaos and therefore did not create any, nor did our activists.

"We expected the Election Commission and law enforcement agencies to act responsibly; however, that did not happen. Further decisions will be taken when the vote counting ends," he added.

The BNP has sought to postpone voting in 198 polling centers in the south, where they claim votes have been manipulated.

A letter signed by Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) BNP Agent Abdus Salam was sent to the DSCC returning officer and joint secretary around 3:30pm on Saturday, in this regard.
