The Election Commission on February 13 declared her elected in an official gazette as there were no other contenders

Update : 16 Feb 2019, 05:57 PM

Dr Syeda Zakia Nur Lipi, who has been elected unopposed from Kishoreganj 1 constituency, took oath as a member of the 11th parliament on Saturday.

Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury administered the oath at the Parliament Bhaban, according to a handout issued by Parliament Secretariat.

Chief Whip Noor-E-Alam Chowdhury and Whip Iqbalur Rahim were present at the ceremony.

Awami League candidate Lipi is the sister of late public administration minister Syed Ashraful Islam, who was also a former Awami League general secretary.

The Election Commission on February 13 declared Lipi elected in an official gazette after the last date for withdrawal of candidature, as there were no other contenders in the re-election scheduled for February 28.

The ruling party nominated her as its candidate for Kishorganj 1 by-polls after the commission on January 10 announced the election schedule following the death of Syed Ashraful Islam.

Syed Ashraf, also the son of national leader Syed Nazrul Islam, was elected from the same constituency in the December 30 general election, but died on January 3 before taking oath as MP.
