The United Nations has expressed its awareness regarding the violence and irregularities of the 11th parliamentary election, held on Sunday; and it has expressed regret over the loss of lives, as well as injuries to candidates and others.

The global body also urged all to exercise restraint to maintain a peaceful post-elections atmosphere.

“The United Nations is aware of violent incidents and reports of irregularities in the Bangladesh general elections,” according to an unnamed UN spokesperson, who responded to questions about the elections in Bangladesh.

“We regret the loss of life and injuries sustained by candidates and voters, during the electoral campaign, and on election day,” he was quoted as stating on the UN website.

“We welcome the participation of the opposition in elections for the first time in 10 years. We also call on all sides to exercise restraint and ensure a peaceful post-election environment, where people can maintain their right to assembly and expression,” said the spokesperson.

“We encourage the parties to address electoral complaints in a peaceful manner and through legal means. Violence and attacks on people and property are not acceptable,” he added.
