BNP’s five winners

BNP candidates contested 258 of 299 constituencies under the sheaf of paddy symbol

BNP were able to secure victory in only five constituencies in the 11th general election on Sunday, with the party’s Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir among the winners.

Fakhrul has been elected in Bogra 6 constituency. Although BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia was the party nominated candidate in the constituency, Fakhrul was chosen as the alternative candidate after her candidacy was rejected.

Fakhrul received a total 207,025 votes, while his nearest rival and Jatiya Party candidate Nurul Islam Omar bagged 40,362 votes.

The other four winners from BNP are Mosharraf Hossain in Bogra 4 constituency, Zahidur Rahman in Thakurgaon 3, Aminul Islam in  Chapainawabganj 2, and Harunur Rashid in Chapainawabganj 3.

In Thakurgaon 3 constituency, BNP candidate Zahidur Rahman bagged 87,165 votes, while rebel Awami League candidate Imdadul Haque received 84,109 votes in second.

In Bogra 4, Mosharraf Hossain received 148,585 votes to win the polls, while JaSaD candidate Rezaul Karim Tansen was his nearest rival with 86,048 votes. Rezaul Karim contested the polls under the boat electoral symbol.

In Chapainawabganj 3 constituency, BNP candidate Harunur Rashid earned 1,33,661 votes, while Awami League candidate Abdul Wadud received 85,938 votes in second.

In Chapainawabganj 2 constituency, Aminul Islam received 175,466 votes, while nearest rival and Awami League candidate Ziaur Rahman received 1,39,952 votes.  

A total 284 candidates from Jatiya Oikya Front contested the 11th general election, including 12 who contested under the sheaf of paddy electoral symbol. BNP had no candidates in 16 constituencies, due to the cancellation of the nominated candidates’ candidacies by returning officers, the Election Commission, and the Supreme Court.

The polls in Gaibandha 3 constituency were postponed due to the death of a candidate.
