Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday said the win of the Awami League-led Grand Alliance in the 11th general election is another victory for the people of the country in December — the month of victory.
She came up with the remark when political leaders as well as senior officials of civil and military administration greeted her at her official residence, Ganabhaban, in Dhaka, marking the re-election of her party with absolute majority in the polls, reports UNB.
Hasina said the victory was nothing for her in terms of personal gains, rather, it was a great responsibility towards the country and its people.
She said she thought her re-election was a great opportunity to serve the country and materialize the dreams of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman through completing his unfinished tasks.
Sheikh Hasina secured a third successive term in office with her ruling Awami League and its Grand Alliance partners, winning the 11th general election held on Sunday by a landslide — bagging 267 seats out of 299.
BNP and its Jatiya Oikya Front alliance won only eight seats; while Jatiya Party managed to get 20, making sure that it will return to parliament as the main opposition despite being a ruling partyally.
The prime minister on Monday also extended her greetings to the country's people on the occasion of the New Year.
The political leaders and government officials greeted her by presenting her bouquets.
Those who called on her included Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, Prime Minister's advisers Dr Toufiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury and Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, Najma Rahman, Prime Minister's principal secretary, cabinet secretary, public administration secretary, the chiefs of the three forces, the inspector general of police, the prime minister's press secretary, and the director generals of Border Guard Bangladesh and Rapid Action Battalion.
Hasina's younger sister Sheikh Rehana and daughter Saima Wazed Hossain were present on the occasion.
