As it happened: Awami League wins, PM Hasina makes hat-trick

Voters from across Bangladesh exercised their franchise from 8am to 4pm on Sunday, to elect the next government

4:00AM- Awami League and its Grand Alliance partners get 263 seats out of 298.

With this win, the ruling party returns to power for five more years winning while Awami League President Sheikh Hasina makes a hat-trick by leading her party power for three consecutive terms.  

BNP bags only eight seats, while Ershad’s Jatiya Party wins in 20 constituencies, Election Commission Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed announces.

2:00AM- Returning officers confirm results of 200 constituencies. Candidates of Awami League and the Grand Alliance win 193 seats, BNP and Oikya Front candidates who contested the polls with "sheaf of paddy" symbol or their own symbols, win in five constituencies and independent runners win in two seats.

1:59AM-  Awami League wins 60 seats, Jatiya Party 8, BNP 3, and Independent candidate and Workers Party get one each.

1:23AM- Awami League wins 55 seats, Jatiya Party 6, BNP 3, and Independent candidate and Workers Party get one each.

12:17AM- Awami League wins 30 seats, Jatiya Party 5, BNP 2, and an Independent candidate gets one.

12:07AM (Monday)- As of now, Awami League wins 29 seats, Jatiya Party 5, BNP 2,  and an Independent candidate gets one.

11:58PM- As of now, Awami League wins 27 seats, Jatiya Party 5, BNP 2 and an Independent candidate gets one seat.

11:51PM- HT Imam, Awami League advisor member and co-chairman of election steering committee, directs party leaders and activists not to bring out any victory parades.

“Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina has ordered party men not to bring out any victory processions after getting the final election result,” he says.

11:10PM- Till 10:30pm, unofficial results announced by respective returning officers show that Grand Alliance candidates have won in more than 100 constituencies.

10:08PM- As of now, Awami League wins 20 seats, Helal Uddin says.

9:57PM- Lakhsmipur 1 is taken by Awami League’s Anwar Hossain Khan. He bags 185,438 votes. 

9:55PM- Awami League’s s Farukh Khan bags 30,3168 votes in Gopalganj 1. BNP’s FE Sharfuzzaman gets 57 votes.

9:53PM- Narshingdi 3 is taken by Awami League's Jahidul Haque Bhuiyan. He gets 94,035 votes. 

9:51PM- Mymensingh 8 is taken by Jatiya Party’s Fakhrul Imam. He bags 156,769 votes.

9:50PM- Awami League’s Jewel Areng takes Mymensingh 1 with 258,923 votes.

9:47PM- Awami League’s Shirin Sharmin sweeps Rangpur 6 constituency with 234,426. BNP’s Md Saiful Islam gets     24,053.

9:46PM- Independent candidate Shahid Islam wins Lakhsmipur 2 with 256,784 votes.

9:40PM- Awami League's A K M Bahauddin is declared winner of Comilla 6 constituency. He gets 296,300 while Mohammad Amin Ur Rashid, BNP candidate, gets 18,537.

9:36PM- Former president Hussain Muhammad Ershad wins Rangpur 3 with 142,926 votes while his nearest candidate BNP’s Rita Rahman gets 53,089.

9:33PM- Awami League’s Simin Hossain Rimi wins Gazipur 4 after bagging 203,258 votes. His close opponent Shah Reazul Haq of BNP gets 18,582.

9:27PM- Awami League’s Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim wins Gopalganj 2 with 281,909 votes while BNP’s Md Sirajul Islam Siraj bags 286.

9:23PM- Voting in 22 out of 40,000 polling centres across Bangladesh was suspended due to different types of irregularities, Election Commission Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed says.

9:22PM- A BNP polling agent is killed in Jessore, our correspondent Tauhid Jaman says. 

8:49PM- Islami Andolan Bangladesh (IAB) claims there was vote rigging at many polling centres in 25 constituencies. 

The party wanted to submit a complaint regarding the issue to the Election Commission but Election Commission officials at Agargaon did not meet with them, IAB Senior Joint Secretary General, Hemayet Uddin says.

8:26PM- Speaking to the Dhaka Tribune, Md Nuruzzaman, presiding officer at Technical Teacher Training College, says: "I don’t know why they are not here at the moment." 

He adds that nobody prevented them from coming to the centre.

8:26PM- Oikya Front and BNP rejects poll result.

The alliance says they will seek re-election under non-party government soon.

8:06PM- Election Commission Secretary Helal Uddin unofficially announces Awami League President Sheikh Hasina as the winner of Gopalganj 3 constituency.

Unveiling results of all 108 polling centres in Gopalganj 3, he says: "She won without competition as there was no opposition."

Awami League President Sheikh Hasina gets 229,539 votes while her closet opponent SM Jilani, of BNP, bags only 123. 

7:58PM- Jatiya Oikya Front leader and Nagorik Oikya Convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna calls for re-election in Bogra 2 constituency.

7:57PM- Ex-exclaves residents in Panchagarh vote for the first time, our correspondent Sazzadur Rahman Sazzad reports.

7:56PM- Awami League's Kujendra Lal Tripura takes lead in Khagrachhari. 

Among the total 187 polling centres of this constituency, results of 17 centres are announced officially.

7:55PM- Awami League leads in Khulna 2 and 4 constituencies, based on unofficial results at 56 and 35 polling centres, respectively.

7:45PM- Awami League extends their lead in Khulna 5 constituency, after the counting of votes at 46 polling centres.

The ruling party also maintains strong leads in Khulna 1 and 3 constituencies, after the counting of votes at 76 and 36 polling centres, respectively.

7:15PM- Our correspondents report that Awami League has taken massive leads in Khulna 5 and Gaibandha 5 constituencies, based on unofficial results at 30 and 11 polling centres, respectively.

7:05PM- Our Sathkhira correspondent Asaduzzaman reports that Awami League candidate Mir Mostak Ahmed Robi is in the lead in Sathkhira 2 constituency, based on unofficial results at 32 polling centres.

7:00PM- Islami Andolon Bangladesh sends letters to the Election Commission, complaining of alleged irregularities and vote rigging, reports our correspondent Bilkis Irani.

6:50PM- Awami League Joint General Secretary Abdur Rahman says the 11th general was held in a free, fair and peaceful manner despite minor violence across the country.

Abdur Rahman made the comment during a press conference at the party president's political office in Dhanmondi.

6:35PM- Our correspondent Afrose Jahan Chaity informs that Election Commission Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed began announcing election results from around the country at the EC office in Agargaon, Dhaka at 6:20pm.

6:32PM- Awami League candidate Sheikh Salahuddin Jewel maintains a strong lead in Khulna 2 constituency, based on unofficial results at 27 polling centres.

6:29PM- Awami League candidate Munnujan Sufian takes a massive lead in Khulna 3 constituency, according to unofficial results at 14 polling centres, Returning Officer Md Helal Hossain says. 

6:23PM- At least 18 people killed across the country during incidents of violence on voting day.

6:17PM- Returning Officer Md Helal Hossain informs that Awami League candidate from Khulna 2 Sheikh Salahuddin Jewel is in front in the constituency, based on unofficial results at 50 polling centres, reports our district correspondent Md Hedait Hossain Molla.

6:10PM- Enamul Habib, returning officer in Rangpur, informs that Jatiya Party Chairman and candidate from Rangpur 3 HM Ershad has taken the lead in the constituency, based on unofficial results at four polling centres.

All polling centres in the constituency used EVMs, reports our district correspondent Liakat Ali Badal.

5:18PM- Oikya Front leader and Nagorik Oikya Convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna demands fresh elections in Borgra 2 constituency, alleging police sealed off voting centres, opposition polling agents were expelled, and vote rigging. 

Manna made the demand during a press briefing at Bogra city's Naz Garden Hotel around 4pm, reports our Bogra correspondent Md Nazmul Huda Nasim.

5:04PM- Our Chittagong correspondent Anwar Hossain informs that voting at the polling centre in the Regional Public Administration Training Centre (RPATC) under Chittagong 9 constituency was suspended for six hours till 2pm, as EVMs had malfunctioned.

4:37PM- Activists of Awami League and BNP-Jamaat-e-Islami clashed with each other during Sunday’s voting at a polling centre in Pathantola of Sylhet, Presiding Officer Syed Mohaddir Ahmed says.

4:29PM- BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir says the government is using the administration tools to turn the elections into a mockery.

4:27PM- Unidentified assailants kill a Chhatra League leader in Gazipur, Raihanul Islam Akand reports.

4:23PM- An Awami League leader is killed during a clash between supporters of the ruling party and BNP over occupation of a polling centre in Rajshahi’s Tanore upazila, our correspondent Dulal Abdullah reports.

The incident took place at Mohammadpur High School voting centre, district police’s spokesperson Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police Abdur Razzak says.

4:17PM- Counting of votes begins.  

4:03PM- Mirza Abbas and Afroza Abbas, who are contesting the polls from Dhaka 8 and 9 respectively, announce to boycott of election result, our correspondent Niaz Mahmud reports.

4:00PM- Voting ends.

3:19PM- BNP candidate for Tangail 3 constituency (Ghatail upazila) Lutfor Rahman Khan Azad boycotts election alleging vote rigging and irregularities by the ruling party men.

3:09PM- As of now, 11 people have been killed across Bangladesh, including in Natore, Comilla, Brahmanbaria, Bogra, Narshingdi, Rajshahi, Cox’s Bazar, Chittagong Bashkhali, Noakhali and Rangamati.

2:53PM- Hero Alam, an independent candidate for Bogra 4 constituency, boycotts the polls.

2:47PM- Election violence claims two lives in Comilla, Nangalkot Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Ashraf says.

2:41PM- Till filing of the report, at least nine people are killed across Bangladesh.  

2:38PM- An Awami League polling agent-- Md Milon Miya, 45—is killed in poll violence in the Narsingdi 3 constituency.

2:27PM- Jamaat-e-Islami, an ally of BNP, announces to boycott the 11th parliamentary election alleging massive vote rigging.

2:21PM- Clash between Awami League and BNP-Jamaat activists kills an Ansar member at Tularam Government Primary School polling centre in Begumganj upazila, our Noakhali correspondent Ranajit Chandra Kuri reports quoting Noakhali Superintendent of Police Ilias Sharif.

2:20PM- BNP candidates for Khulna 4, 5 and 6 constituencies boycott polls citing irregularities, our correspondent Hedait Hossain reports.

2:18PM- Tangail 2 BNP candidate Sultan Salauddin Tuku boycotts election over alleged irregularities.

2:00PM- Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda says only after the voting ends, it can be determined whether the 11th general election was participatory or not.

1:55PM- BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi says the party will observe the election situation till the end even though some of their candidates have already boycotted the polls.

1:52PM- Nationalist Democratic Movement party's Chairman Bobby Hajjaj claims that polling centres in the Dhaka 6 constituency are being forcefully occupied by JaPa supporters. 

1:50PM- Talking to the media at the Election Commission Secretariat, Dhaka 10 constituency candidate for Jatiya Oikya Front, Abdul Mannan, alleges that their polling agents were beaten up and kicked out of polling centres.

1:47PM- Satkhira 4 BNP candidate Gazi Nazrul Islam boycotts election alleging vote rigging.

1:45PM- Voting is going on peacefully in Dhaka 18 constituency in a festive mood, says our correspondent Humayun Kabir Bhuiyan after visiting 19 polling centres in the constituency.

He, however, says polling agents of major opposition BNP were not found in any of the centres.

1:29PM- Jubo League activist killed in Cox’s Bazar clash, Pekua police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Zaker Hossain Bhuiyan confirms.

1:20PM- Meraj Ali, a resident of the Mohanpur upazila under the Rajshahi 3 constituency, is killed during a clash between the Awami League and the BNP. 

Rajshahi Assistant Superintendent of Police Abdur Razzak tells the Dhaka Tribune: “Meraj was killed in a clash over establishing dominance between the Awami League and BNP in the Pakuria Govt Primary School polling centre.”

12:42PM- Bina Paul, assistant returning officer and also the UNO of Sonaimuri upazila, says: “Voting has been suspended at Nawabganj Government Primary School in Noakhali 1 constituency after miscreants snatched away election materials and snatched away a shotgun from an Ansar member,.”

The incident occurred around 10:30am, our Noakhali correspondent Ranajit Chandra Kuri says.

12:33PM- Independent candidate for Dhaka 1 constituency Salma Islam withdraws herself from the election.

12:30PM- Election observer says voting is going peacefully in Dhaka.

Saarc Human Rights Foundation, the delegation of an election observer group, reports orderly queues and the presence of opposition party polling agents in the centres. 

12:18PM- Finance Minister AMA Muhith in Sylhet says: “BNP is an expert at making allegations. Voting is being held peacefully.”

Number of female voters is more in the centre, she adds. 

11:15AM- BNP’s Dhaka 8 candidate Mirza Abbas and his wife Afroza Abbas, who is also running from Dhaka 9 constituency, says they will not cast their votes in protest of the irregularities.

"During visits, we have found that most of our supporters could not vote as people from the polling centres said their votes have already been cast," Mirza Abbas told reporters at Mirza Abbas Mohila Degree College.

Afroza claims that their agents are either beeing pushed out or beaten in 90% of the centres.

11:10AM- Awami League Joint General Secretary Jahangir Kabir Nanak tells in press briefing in Dhaka that BNP and Jamaat are trying to create an atmosphere of terror during the election, and lying in front of the media.

Listing a number of attacks on polling centres and ruling party campaign offices, he claims five Awami League men have been killed in BNP-Jamaat attacks since Saturday.

11AM- In Bhola, voting is being held in 476 centres in four constituencies. Our correspondent Ahad Chowdhury Tuhin reports that ruling Awami League candidate for Bhola 1 Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed voted at 8am and BNP candidate Golam Nabi Alamgir at 8:30am at Bangla School centre.

10:48AM- Finance Minister AMA Muhith -- along with his younger brother AK Abdul Momen -- cast his ballot at Durga Kumar Government Primary School polling centre in Sylhet.

10:45AM- Our Narsingdi Correspondent Asaduzzaman Ripon reports that voting is being held peacefully in the 632 centres in five seats. He says voter presence was low in the morning due to the cold.

10:41AM- BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir expresses unhappiness with elections, saying that it is not being held fairly.

10:51AM- Our Tangail correspondent Abdullah Al Numan captures some moments of peaceful voting at a polling centre in Tangail 5 constituency.

10:36AM- Jatiya Oikya Front leader Dr Kamal Hossain says: “We are getting news that our agents are being kicked out from different voting centres.”

10:27AM- Prime Minister’s ICT Affairs Adviser Sajeeb Ahmed Wazed Joy cast his vote at Dhaka City polling centre.

10:18AM- Voters are seeing standing in long lines and no irregularities are reported in Habiganj Sadar, our Habiganj correspondent Md Noor Uddin.

10:08AM- Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader cast his vote in a polling centre in Noakhali.

Quader, who is contesting from Noakhali 5 constituency (Kabirhat-Companiganj), cast cast his ballot at Udoyon Pre-cadet Academy polling centre in Basurhat Municipality.

9:45am- After inspecting polling center at Viqarunnisa Noon School and College, Inspector General of Police Mohammad Javed Patwary says voting is underway in a peaceful and festive manner across the country, apart from several alleged isolated incidents. 

9:45AM- Voters of Dhaka 13 complains of facing technical glitches while using EVMs.

They say their fingerprints are not matching, which is making them confused about whether their votes have been cast.

9:42AM- Election Commissioner Mahbub Talukdar cast his ballot, along with his wife, at Ispahani Girls School polling centre in Eskaton area.

After casting his vote, Mahbub Talukdar tells the reporters that he did not find any opposition party polling agents in the centre.

9:36AM- A total of 2,124,554 registered voters in Dhaka 6 and 13, Chittagong 9, Rangpur 3, Khulna 2, and Satkhira 2 constituencies are casting their votes using EVMs.

9:11AM- Long line of voters—mostly youths—are seeing standing outside the polling centre at Government Titumir College, reports our correspondent Saidun Nabi.

Presiding Officer Mohammad Nure Alam says voting is ongoing peacefully.

On duty police official Sub Inspector T M Faridul Alam says 48 members of law enforcement agencies-- including Ansar-- is deployed at the centre.


Partho is contesting as an ally of BNP-led 20-party alliance. Akbar Hossain Pathan Farooque is contesting under Awami League’s banner in Dhaka 17.

About 314,000 voters are expected to caste their votes in 125 centres in the constituency.


9:08AM- Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal casts his vote at Rajdhani High School around.

•    40,183 voting centres

•    Voting will continue till 4pm for 299 parliamentary seats up for the 11th general election     

•    Over a third of the voters – 52.6 million male and 51.6 million female – are young voters.

9:03AM- BNP candidate for Dhaka 17 Andaleeve Rahman Partho alleges that his agents have been forced out from different centres in the constituencies. 

Partho is who is contesting as an ally of BNP-led 20-party alliance.

9:02AM- Voting is suspended in a polling centre in Noakhali 3 constituency.

Confirming the matter to the Dhaka Tribune, Assistant Returning Officer Ruhul Amin said: “Electoral equipment has been looted from a polling centre in Babunagar Govt Primary School, under Sharifpur union of Begumganj upazila.”

8:56AM- Oikya Front chief Dr Kamal Hossain casts ballot at Viqarunnisa Noon School and College.

8:40AM- Awami League candidate for Dhaka 9 Saber Hossain Chowdhury expects that election atmosphere will remain peaceful  till the end of voting.

“We are hopeful of our victory,” he says after casting his vote at Khilgaon Girls School and College in Dhaka.

Jatiyatabadi Mohila Dal President Afroza Abbas, as the BNP candidate, is competing against Awami League’s Saber Hossain Chowdhury in Dhaka 9 constituency.

Total 425,501 voters are expected to cast their vote in 167 polling centres in Dhaka 9.


8:24AM- BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir casts his vote at Thakurgaon Government Girls School. 

8:20AM- People are standing in long lines in the voting centres in Adabar, Ring Road and Noorjahan Road areas.

8:04AM- While casting her vote, Awami League President Sheikh Hasina says: “People will cast their vote for Awami League to ensure the win of pro-liberation forces.”  

8:00AM- Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina casts her vote at the Dhaka City College polling centre.

8:00AM (Sunday)- Voting begins.
