Police have detained a man pretending to be a valid electoral candidate in the Ulipur upazila of Kurigram.
Dudu Joddar, the man posing as a parliamentary candidate, was caught while campaigning for votes from people using the unregistered “helicopter” symbol in the Ulipur Bazar area around 9:30pm Monday.
Ulipur police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Moazzem Hossain confirmed the matter, adding that they seized a battery-operated easy bike and a megaphone. The driver of the easy bike was also held.
Resident of a local village, Dudu pretended to be an independent candidate and even had posters of his fake party printed for attempted authenticity. However, locals were aware that the Kurigram 3 constituency that Ulipur falls under does not have an independent candidate, and called the police on Dudu.
OC Moazzem also said: “Dudu has an outstanding warrant in his name for stealing. He was probably just fooling around, but we will interrogate him to find out if there was an ulterior motive.”
