More than 50% of 2,677 poll centres under Barisal division, including Barisal city, have been marked as “important” by law enforcement agencies.
Barisal Range police sources said Barisal City Corporation has 197 centres while there are 2,480 voting centres in six other districts.
These centres were placed into two categories; “general” and “important.”
Some centres of the Barisal, Patuakhali, and Bhola districts were also marked as “island (shoal).”
A total of 126 voting centres were marked as general and 71 were marked as important by Barisal Metropolitan Police (BMP).
Additionally, of the 2480 centres of six districts, 1683 were marked as important, 797 as general, and 69 as island (shoal) by police of different districts.
Barisal Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner Nasiruddin Mallik said: “It is important for the police to maintain law and order at all polling centers. However, considering the weakness of infrastructure, communication, distance from police stations, etc., we classified the centres.”
Shafiqul Islam, deputy inspector general (DIG) of Barisal Range police, said law enforcement, including police, will take all steps needed for a fair and peaceful vote. Law enforcement agencies will vigilantly maintain law and order during and after the voting days.
By district, 394 centres were marked as important, 195 as general, and 19 as island (shoal) under Barisal district.
In Patuakhali district, out of 489 centres, 346 were marked as important, 122 as general and 21 as island (shoal).
In Bhola district, out of 476 centres, 374 were marked as important, 73 as general and 29 as island (shoal).
In Barguna district, 192 out of 292 centres were marked important, 100 as general.
In Pirojpur district, 271 out of 378 centres were marked as important and 107 as general.
In Jhalakathi district, 200 out of 237 centres were marked as important and 37 as general.
