BNP-led 20-party alliance coordinator Col (retd) Oli Ahmed has said that the country is gradually heading towards bloodshed and the ruling party is responsible for it.
He made the remarks while speaking at a press briefing at Chittagong Press Club on Monday. The 20-party alliance candidates from different constituencies of Chittagong were present at the event.
Oli, the president of Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), also urged the law enforcement to abide by the laws and remain unbiased towards all electoral candidates.
“The country was not in such a terrible condition even during the Pakistan period. We can only liken the current state of affairs to that of Hitler's Germany,” he told the press.
“The election officials are not picking up phones. Being a candidate, I can call the returning or assistant returning officer. However, they are now scared. We cannot talk to them. Even the officials of the law enforcement agencies are not picking up phones. The candidates belonging to 20-party alliance are being arrested and made accused in cases,” said Oli.
“It is not desirable to push the country towards anarchy and destruction. The deterioration of law and order is not acceptable. A tense situation is prevailing in the country. Government officials should remain impartial and neutral while discharging their duties,” added Oli.
“The 20-party alliance is not against anyone. We do not believe in vindictive acts. We want everyone to exercise their franchise without fear,” said Oli.
“The ruling party has been conducting electoral campaigns, but we have not because we are respectful to the constitution and laws,” alleged BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury.
BNP Vice Chairman Abdullah Al Noman said: “The media cannot discharge its roles like before. There is no looking back and we have to march forward. We are not afraid of anything and we will cast our votes.”
