Voicing deep concern over the arrest of three of the party's candidates, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday claimed the Election Commission (EC) is going to implement the government's blueprint instead of holding a fair and credible election.

Speaking at a press conference at the BNP chairperson's Gulshan office, he also alleged that the EC is working as per the directives of the prime minister and the government, reports UNB.

"Three of our candidates were arrested over the last two days. It has now become clear that the EC is not going to hold an acceptable and fair election. They are implementing the government's blueprint," Fakhrul said.

The BNP leader claimed the prime minister was trying to control all aspects of the election process, as she fears defeat in a credible election.

Fakhrul urged the commission to take steps to stop the arrest of BNP leaders and activists,as well as the filing of fictitious cases against them.

He also demanded the immediate release of arrested BNP candidates, leaders and activists. "Otherwise, the Election Commission and the government will be held responsible for any emerging situation."

The BNP leader said their party will formally lodge complaints with the EC about the arrest of their candidatesand activists on Saturday and Sunday.

In addition, Fakhrul lamented that the EC is yet to take action even though the party has sent several letters to the commission demanding the transfer of partisan officials of the police and civil administrations.
