The Awami League-led alliance has reportedly offered 47 seats to HM Ershad-led Jatiya Party (JaPa) to contest the 11th parliamentary election, according to multiple media reports.

The former military dictator is being offered the Dhaka 17 constituency. Awami League’s (AL) had previously nominated film star Akbar Hossain Pathan Farooque.

Meanwhile, BNP has nominated Major General (retd) Ruhul Alam Chowdhury and Major General (retd) Syed Muhammad Ibrahim to contest Dhaka 17.

Earlier it was reported that the ruling party alliance was likely to offer 36 seats to JaPa who were seeking at least 51 seats.

The 47 seats come fresh off the heels of intense negotiations between the two parties.

The ruling party alliance has also given JaPa seats in Patuakhali 1, Cox’s Bazar 3, Comilla 2 and Brahmanbaria 2, according to the reports.

The final list of the candidates from the AL-led alliance will be made public after the scrutiny of nomination papers on December 2.

On Sunday, AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader said they would publish the list of candidates on Monday but later at a press conference said they would hold back the list for “strategic” reasons.

In the 2014 election, which was boycotted by BNP, Awami League had won 234 seats after nominating candidates in 247 constituencies, while JaPa contested in 86 seats and won in 34, becoming the largest opposition party in parliament in the process.
