Update : 25 Nov 2018, 11:43 PM

The BNP has claimed that police attacked and fired at an election program which was going on in the house of the Abhaynagar Upazila BNP Vice President Nurul Haque Mollah Bhaghaon Sunday, a claim which the police have rejected.

Nurul, also the upazila chairman, said: “A worker’s program regarding the submission of the nomination paper of Engr TS Ayub from the Jessore 4 constituency was going on at my Hospital Road house in the afternoon.

“Around 6pm police entered my house and baton-charged the people over there and fired four blank rounds from their shotguns. Around 7-8 people were injured in the attack.”

We obtained permission from the UNO and election officials to conduct the meeting on a small scale, but numbers more than expected showed up.

Commenting on the matter the Abhaynagar police station OC Alamgir Hossain said: “There were around a thousand BNP activists having a meeting beside the BNP leader’s house. We only went to the place to know what the meeting was about, but they got scared and ran away.”

“No such attack took place at that spot,” the OC added.

The UNO Md Shahinuzzaman said: “The BNP leader had said he would have a meeting with three to four people at his house and took permission. There were about 200-300 people which clearly violated the electoral code of conduct and for that Nurul has been given a warning.
