BNP slams law enforcement for their ‘arrest spree’

The party’s secretary general claims their most-eligible candidates are being arrested

Update : 19 Nov 2018, 03:42 PM

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has alleged that law enforcement is arresting their party leaders who have the best prospects of winning the 11th general election.

He said this to reporters on Monday, reports UNB.

"We're observing, with serious concern and anger, that the tendency to arrest opposition leaders and activists in false and ghost cases – and deny them bail – has marked a sharp rise—even after the announcement of the election schedule and the prime minister's announcement [to stop such arrests]," he said.

In a statement, the BNP leader furthered: "Especially those opposition candidates who have the brightest prospects to be successful in the upcoming election are being arrested and denied bail."

He also alleged that the lower court is delaying bail petition hearings for the prospective BNP candidates for political reasons.

Fakhrul said: “The arrest and harassment of our leaders is occurring so that the ruling party can make political gains.”

He deplored that the Election Commission is not creating a level playing field—even after the election schedule was announced.

The BNP leader said some of their candidates were threatened, over the phone, in the name of different agencies—while toll money is demanded from some others, destroying the election atmosphere.

"These incidents indicatethat the government and the Election Commission are not sincere about holding a: free, fair, neutral, and inclusive election."

He said: their party Chairperson Khaleda Zia, ex-whip Munirul Haque Chowdhury, BNP Joint Secretaries General Aslam Chowdhury, Habibun Nabi Khan Sohel, Khaleda's special assistant Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas, Jubo Dal General Secretary Sultan Salauddin Tuku, and many other leaders have been kept in jail—denying them bail in different cases.

Fakhrul demanded the government immediately release Khaleda, and her other party leaders, to ensure a fair election atmosphere.
