Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has urged people to prevent subversive activities initiated by her party’s arch-political rival BNP.
“BNP has become restless seeing the 11th general election being arranged in a festive mood. They always try to foil the election environment,”she said on Thursday.
Hasina, also the Awami League president, was briefing the media before a meeting of the ruling party’s Parliamentary Board at her political office in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi in the afternoon.
She urged the people to stay vigilantand take a stand against BNP’s violent actsthat have been launched to foil the polls, now slated for December 30.
Her remarks came a day after violent clashes between police and BNP leaders and activists in front of the party’s headquarters at Naya Paltan, which left around 50 people, including policemen, injured.
Apart from running battles, the clash also resulted into vandalising of several vehicles and torching of two police vehicles on Wednesday.
Police later on the same day filed three cases over the incidents.
The prime minister on Thursday also heavily criticized BNP for attacking police and torching their vehicles, and asked them not to hatch conspiracies to foil the upcoming electionas the party has decided to participate in it.
"I would like to urge them [BNP] to try and cooperate [with the Election Commission] in holding the election," she said.
Hasinasaid that BNP had alsoconspired during the 2014election, but did not succeed. "They will not be successful this time too as the people are with us."
People wantthe election to be held in festive mood, so that they could cast their vote to elect a government of their choice, she said.
“I am optimistic that Bangladesh’speople will re-elect Awami League as we have developed the country massively in the last 10 years,” added the prime minister.
