Dr Kazi Faruk’s party will be able to contest this election

The High Court also issued a rule seeking explanation as to why the decision of cancelling registration of the Oikyaboddha Nagorik Andolon should not be declared illegal

The High Court stayed the Election Commission's letter cancelling the registration of Oikyaboddha Nagorik Andolon on Tuesday, a political party led by Dr Kazi Faruk Ahmed, founder chairman of Proshika.

A stay of proceedings is a ruling by a court, halting further legal process in a trial or other legal actions.

The High Court also issued a rule seeking explanation as to why the decision of cancelling registration of the Oikyaboddha Nagorik Andolon should not be declared illegal.

A bench comprising of Justices Sheikh Hassan Arif and Razik-Al-Jalil passed the order after hearing a writ petition filed by the Oikyaboddha Nagorik Andolon President Dr Kazi Faruk and General Secretary Abdus Samad.

Advocate Manzill Murshid stood for the petitioner while Deputy Attorney general Mokhlesur Rahman stood for the state.

“The party's registration cancellation was stayed until the rule issued by the High Court is disposed of,” said Murshid.

Oikyaboddha Nagorik Andolon secured registration from the EC on November 16, 2008.

On October 4 this year, the EC cancelled the registration of the party.
