The ruling party will begin a countrywide election campaign today that will run till October 7, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader said on Sunday.

The senior Awami League leader, also the road transport and bridges minister, made the announcement at a press briefing after a secretary-level meeting at the party president’s political office in Dhanmondi, Dhaka.

To conduct the election campaign smoothly and effectively, the party has formed four teams led by joint general secretaries Mahabubul Alam Hanif, Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Dipu Moni and Abdur Rahman.

These four teams will begin the election campaign in Dhaka’s Wari, Paltan, Mohammadpur and Uttara areas today, where they will speak to the masses to inform them about the government’s development work.

The party also congratulated party President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for receiving two international awards – the IPS International Achievement Award and the 2018 Special Distinction Award for Leadership – for her humanitarian and responsible policy in hosting the Rohingyas and for her far-sighted leadership over the Rohingya issue.

As the prime minister arrives home today after attending the 73rd session of the United Nations General Assembly, Obaidul said they party would not arrange a grand reception at the airport, in order to avoid public suffering.

In response to a query on BNP’s rally in Dhaka on Sunday, Obaidul said the BNP leaders had been seen taking selfies on stage, and a few people attended the rally.

“Seeing how many people were present at BNP’s rally, it is proven that BNP’s popularity is gradually decreasing,” the Awami League general secretary said.

He further said the election would be held as per the constitution.

“The Election Commission is responsible for holding a free, fair and acceptable election, and the election-time government will help the commission do it.”

When asked about Jatiya Oikya Prokriya, Obaidul declined to comment, saying in the days to come, there would be many political alliances.
