The Awami League-led 14-party alliance has announced that it will hold rallies across the country, including Dhaka, ahead of the upcoming 11th general election.
“We will hold rallies in Dhaka and three divisional cities in October with the consent of prime minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina,” Awami League Presidium Member and alliance Coordinator Mohammed Nasim said while addressing a rally at the Mahanagar Natya Mancha in Dhaka on Saturday.
The 14-party alliance will hold rallies in Rajshahi on October 9, Natore on October 10 and in Khulna on October 13, he said, adding that they later would hold a grand rally in the city after a discussion with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Nasim also added that the recently formed Jatiya Oikya Prokriya, an alliance initiated by AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury-led Juktofront and Dr Kamal Hossain’s Gono Forum, was constituted not to establish democracy but to hatch conspiracies.
Workers’ Party of Bangladesh (WPB) President Rashed Khan Menon said those who joined the alliance united to foil the national election.
He said these people were legal advisers to the previous military-backed caretaker government in 2007.
“They were the campaigners of minus two theory and reformists. But now they have joined hands to establish democracy,” said Rashed, also social welfare minister.
The “minus two formula” during the 2007-08 caretaker government wanted to expel Awami League President Sheikh Hasina and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia from politics.
Rashed said the aim of the rally is to unite the people against the Oikya Prokriya’s conspiracies.
Awami League Advisory Council Member and Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu said those who resort to criminal activities in the name of movement should be prevented.
Awami League Presidium Member and Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury said the alliance wants to form a democracy of conspiracies.
Samyabadi Dal General Secretary Dilip Barua called on leaders and activists of the 14-party alliance to take to the streets to thwart the conspiracies of the alliance.
