BNP leads in Sylhet, but result pending

Ariful Haque Chowdhury still has to wait sometime before being confirmed of his victory

Update : 30 Jul 2018, 06:50 PM

The BNP appears to be on the verge of a victory in the Sylhet mayor race, but a revote in two cancelled polling centres means it will have to wait some time for a confirmation.

The party's mayor candidate Ariful Haque Chowdhury won 90,496 votes in 132 centres, according to unofficial results issued from the returning officer's station Monday night.

Awami League's Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran was trailing behind with 85,870 votes.

However, the returning officer for the city polls did not announce an unofficial winner as two remaining centres need to hold polls.

The centres are Shah Gazi Syed Borhanuddin Madrash under ward 24 and Habinandi Government Primary School under ward 27.

The number of voters in those two centres is 4,787, while Ariful's lead is 4,626 votes.

Awami League has also demanded that the Election Commission cancel the Sylhet city polls, saying the numbers announced by the returning officer do not match numbers coming from its agents.

Voting ended in the city at 4pm Monday.
