BNP mayoral candidate Nazrul Islam Monju has expressed outrage at what he called “the mass arrest” of party leaders and activists ahead of the Khulna City Corporation election.
“Police are arresting BNP leaders and activists every day from their homes,” he claimed at a media briefing at his home on Friday.
“The government is trying to create panic among the BNP activists,” Monju alleged. “It is trying to influence the election.”
He said 17 BNP activists were arrested on Thursday from the city.
“Police arrest our party activists wherever they go to campaign,” the BNP candidate claimed. “I cannot concentrate on campaigning as I have to visit police stations frequently [to inquire about the activists].”
He said the arrests would not help the Awami League win the election.
The Khulna City Corporation is scheduled to go to polls on May 15.
