Islamic University closed sine die

The Islamic University (IU) in Kushtia was shut down yesterday for an indefinite period as the students went berserk following the death of a fellow student in a road accident.

The authorities took the decision at an emergency meeting of the IU syndicate.

The male students of the university was asked to vacate their halls by 6pm yesterday while the female ones by 10am today.

Earlier, the students went on the rampage, torching 13 vehicles and vandalising 22 others on the campus following the death of Titu, a 3rd year student of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering Department.

He was killed when a bus rented by the university authorities knocked down him at the campus around noon.

The aggrieved students also vandalised the Academic, Faculty, Science and TSC buildings at the time.

Upon information, police rushed in, charged baton on the agitating students and lobbed teargas shells to disperse them.

The students also hurled brick chips at police prompting the law enforcers to fire 150 rubber bullets leaving 20 students injured, including six with bullets.

The students hit by bullets were taken to a local hospital.

Meanwhile, Vice Chancellor of the university Professor Abdul Hakim Sarker expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of Titu.

In a condolence message, he said the untimely death of Titu was not desirable.
