A translation workshop titled “Bangla-English Literary Translation Workshop” started at the University of Liberal Arts, Bangladesh (ULAB) on Saturday. Organised by the university’s Dhaka Translation Centre (DTC), the five-day event was inaugurated by ULAB VC Professor Imran Rahman.
Organised in partnership with the British Centre for Literary Translation, Commonwealth Writers and English PEN, the workshop will be attended by 10 participants from across the country, selected to represent a range of ages and experience levels. The workshop will be led by the award-winning Indian literary translator Arunava Sinha.
During the workshop, participants will work on a consensus translation of a short story by celebrated Bangladeshi writer Shaheen Akhtar, who will be present during the sessions to guide the process.
Speakers at the workshop include Emma D’Costa of Commonwealth Writers, Fakrul Ala, professor of English at Dhaka University, Kate Griffin, international programme director at the British Centre for Literary Translation, Kaiser Haq, DTC director and eminent poet and translator, and Khademul Islam, editor of Bengal Lights Books.
Following the workshop, participants will be assigned stories to translate for an anthology of Bangladesh fiction, which will be published both in Bangladesh and the UK.
