Update : 11 Nov 2014, 08:22 PM

The 6th National Undergraduate Mathematics Olympiad will begin across the country on November 14.

Undergraduate students from any background can take part in the national level Olympiad.

Bangladesh Mathematical Society (BMS) announced the schedule for the event at a press conference at the Teachers Students Center (TSC) of Dhaka University yesterday.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof M Anwar Hossain, co-convener of the event,  said the BMS has been organising the event at the national level to remove the fear of mathematics from the minds of the country’s students.

The country’s youths are losing their interest to study  mathematics, which considered as the key to science, only because of fear of it, he said.

Around 600 participants from different parts of the country are expected to participate in the event this year, he added.

With the financial support from AF Mujinur Rahmman Foundation, the BMS has been arranging the event since 2009. The Dhaka Tribune will be the media partner of the event this year.

As a part of the national event, the Olympiad will be held in the country’s six regions – Khulna, Chittagong, Rajshahi, Sylhet, Dhaka North and Dhaka South.

As per schedule, the Olympiad at the regional level will be held on November 14 in Khulna, on November 15 in Rajshahi, on November 21 in Dhaka North, on November 28 in Chittagong and on November 29 in Dhaka South and Sylhet region. Sixty participants will be selected from the regional  level Olympiads which will end on November 29.

The final round of the event will be held in Dhaka on December 12. The top 10 finalists in the final round will be awarded with crests and certificates of excellence, while the top finalists will be given financial awards.
